Temps in the City blog - Moving on…but to where?
So, student life is but a distant memory.
Gone are the long lie-ins, the Netflix binges till the small hours of the morning, the £1-a-shot nights down the student union and the constant struggle to make it to a 11am seminar.
Now you’ve got the qualifications in your back pocket and your student loan to pay off it’s time to face facts…
You need a job.
But where to go? What to do? The world you have known for the past three years (maybe more) has now vanished and now there are more pressing matters about where the next night out is coming from.
You might seem a little lost and confused. Post-student life is a time which no person expects to happen so quickly, but when it does it throws up all sorts of questions, especially when it comes to careers.
Let’s face it, the majority of post-grads who set out for THAT job never actually find THAT job, largely because THAT job means you have to have a lot experience. Very rarely (unless you know someone high up in the industry) does THAT job ever materialise.
So, here’s a thought… how about temporary work? Yes, you read that right, temp work. It’s a good choice, and here’s why:
Yes, you have the qualifications for your specific job you want but that’s a way off so why not spread your horizons and seek out something a bit different. You never know, you might prefer it.
You’re young, you’ve got something many people don’t have – time on your side. The chances out there in the wide world of work are infinite and who knows where three months working as a Receptionist could take you.
You are at the start of a journey and how you choose to face it depends on your character. Most (not all, unfortunately) are excited about the future so start now. Be enthusiastic and you never know what the future holds.
Temp doesn’t always mean temporary
It might say six months on the contract but temp work doesn’t always mean you will be out the door in six months. Your “temporary” work could lead to the position becoming slightly more permanent. Given the right guidance, you will have the chance to grow in the business so take this opportunity. If the position is not for you then you have the opportunity to cast your net wider.
Experience speaks volumes
The more experience in the workplace you have, the better chances you have in the workplace. Temp work gives you that experience. But not only that. It gives you the opportunity to network build business relationship, it gives you the chance to experiment different industries - and varied experience is something valued by employers nowadays - and, most importantly, gives you a good idea of what your next move should be.
